"Look! This is where we first talked to each other about the cup of coffee."

We stopped. Natalie and Mardig looked around, and suddenly we weren't just standing at a church retreat center anymore. We were standing inside the beginning of their story.

"OMG, do you remember walking here?"

"Wow, this is crazy!"

"I can't believe we're here right now."

Every few steps seemed to unlock another memory. Another story. Another wait, do you remember when...?!

And I basically got a front-row seat to all of it.

Natalie and Mardig chose to have their engagement session at the church retreat camp where they first met, and walking onto the grounds with them felt a little like opening a scrapbook and somehow being able to step inside the pages. Except I had never been there before. They had.

And that made it even sweeter.

While everything around me was new, Natalie and Mardig were seeing old memories everywhere they looked.

They remembered the paths they walked. The conversations they had. The friends who were there. The places where tiny, seemingly ordinary moments happened before either of them could possibly understand just how important those moments would become.

Including, apparently, a conversation about a cup of coffee which unknowingly to Natalie at the time, Mardig doesn't even like coffee.

Because sometimes that's how the really good stories begin. Not with fireworks. Not with some grand cinematic declaration. Just two people. A retreat. A conversation. And a cup of coffee.

But standing there with them all this time later, there was something almost surreal about knowing where those little moments eventually led. I watched their faces light up as they remembered. I listened as they told me stories about the friends who were there. They shared pieces of their faith with me and talked about finding answered prayers in one another. And somewhere between taking photos, laughing together, and wandering from one meaningful spot to the next, I realized what an incredible privilege it was to be trusted with this part of their story.

Because if you don't know Natalie and Mardig, I genuinely feel like you're missing out on a little bit of easy joy in your life. These two are radiant. They have enormous hearts. They are playful and silly and completely willing to laugh at themselves. They dote over each other in that effortless way where you can tell taking care of one another isn't something they have to think about. It's just what they do.

And underneath all of that joy is a faith that is so deeply woven into who they are and how they love each other. God's grace felt present throughout their entire story that afternoon.

Not because anything huge or dramatic happened during our session. Actually, I think it was the opposite.

It was in the little things. The way they looked at each other when one remembered something the other had forgotten. The laughter that came with an old story. The excitement of recognizing a familiar spot. The quiet realization that they were standing in a place where they once barely knew each other, now preparing to promise each other forever.

There were moments when photographing them honestly felt like watching a scene from a Nicholas Sparks story unfold in front of me. Romantic. A little dreamy. Almost too perfect to believe.

Except I watched their faces when we arrived. I saw the way they lit up. And there was nothing fictional about that. This place mattered. This story mattered. And now, having just watched Natalie and Mardig get MARRIED this past weekend, I think these photos somehow mean even more.

Before I share the chapter where they became husband and wife, I needed to come back here first. Back to the paths they once walked. Back to the stories they couldn't stop telling. Back to the place where two individual lives began weaving together before they knew exactly where God was leading them. Back to that cup of coffee.

Because now we know what came next.

And maybe that's my favorite thing about photographing love stories. Sometimes you get to preserve a moment while it's happening. And sometimes, years later, you get to look back and realize you were photographing a piece of history.

Natalie and Mardig, thank you for letting me into yours. Thank you for walking me through the beginning of your story and trusting me with the memories, prayers, laughter, and people that helped shape it. Thank you for being exactly who you are: joyful, faithful, hilarious, loving, and so incredibly easy to adore.

Getting to photograph your engagement was special. Getting to witness you become husband and wife made it even sweeter. And knowing that somewhere along the way, all of this started with two people at a church retreat and a conversation about a cup of coffee? Yeah. I think that's pretty darn magical. 🤍
