He rolled up his sleeves like he was preparing for something serious.
Looked at Iren. Looked at me. Shook his head with a smirk.
And before either of us could say another word, Ivan scooped Iren up and tossed her over his shoulder like it was the most natural thing in the world. She squealed. He laughed. The seagulls soared overhead like they had been hired for the moment. And suddenly, Lighthouse Landing Beach didn’t feel like Evanston anymore, it felt like a movie set.
That was the tone of the entire evening. Effortless. Joyful. Completely them.
At the time of this session, they were celebrating six years together. Six years of choosing each other. Six years of inside jokes, shared memories, and building a life side by side. Iren had baked the cutest little cake and packed up a beach picnic to celebrate. And there I was, the very happy third wheel, witnessing something that felt genuinely magical.
The entire evening felt cinematic. The golden light bouncing off the water. The wind catching Iren’s hair. The way Ivan looked at her like she was the only person on the beach. There was no awkwardness. No forced posing. No pretending. Just two people who are completely, entirely comfortable with one another.
And that comfort? That’s what makes everything look so natural. The laughter never stopped. Not once. Whether they were running hand in hand through the sand, cuddling close on their picnic blanket, or feeding each other bites of cake, they were having the time of their lives. It felt like the early days of dating, when the butterflies are loud and everything feels exciting, except this wasn’t new love. This was six-year love.
And that’s what made it even more beautiful.
Everything they do feels romantic, but not in a dramatic way. In a steady, intentional, deeply-rooted way. The kind of love that feels easy because it’s built on friendship. The kind of love that doesn’t need to prove itself because it simply exists.
Watching Iren and Ivan together is a reminder to keep dating your person. To celebrate the milestones, even the quiet ones. To pack a cake and have a beach picnic just because it’s Tuesday and you love each other. To laugh loudly. To pick each other up and run toward the water even if the sand gets everywhere. Because you never know which ordinary evening is going to become one of your favorite memories.
And while this session was some time ago, I know that same laughter and foundation carries into their lives today with their precious baby boy. They’ve stepped into each new season together with the same grace and ease they had that day on the beach. That doesn’t happen by accident. That happens when love is deep, friendship is strong, and you continue choosing each other every single day.
Iren and Ivan, thank you for letting me third wheel your anniversary picnic and for trusting me to tell your story. You make loving someone look effortless in the most beautiful way. Thank you for your friendship, your warmth, and for reminding all of us what it looks like to truly enjoy the life you’re building together. 🤍
